Collective
Plucjurn is a small educational project focused on practical hive inspection. It is operated by Zet B.V., registered in the Netherlands, and serves small-scale beekeepers in the Netherlands.
How the project started
New beekeepers often leave a hive inspection with a strong feeling about the colony and a weak written record. The feeling fades; the record, if incomplete, cannot be used to compare one week with the next. Local courses teach equipment and seasonal calendars well; fewer materials isolate the act of looking and writing down what was seen.
Plucjurn grew from that gap. Contributors who keep small numbers of colonies in Friesland and neighbouring provinces kept seeing the same pattern: inspections that jumped to the queen search, notebooks filled hours later from memory, and “spotty brood” used as a phrase without a clear description of what was on the frames. The response was to build scenario-based modules that force a sequence and a checklist before any interpretation is added.
Principles
- Observe before interpret — write what is on the frame first
- Sequence over speed — a calm order of looking beats a hurried search
- Fixed fields — empty checklists are more honest than vague paragraphs
- Re-check over alarm — many patterns need a second look, not an immediate conclusion
- Honest scope — education in observation, not veterinary practice
The team
Materials are developed by a small group with experience in small-scale beekeeping, adult field teaching, and the design of observation exercises.
Sjoukje de Vries
Module design
Sjoukje shapes the overall sequence of modules. She keeps a small apiary near Leeuwarden and has taught adult beginners through local associations. She insists every scenario ends with a written checklist.
Harmen Bakker
Brood pattern materials
Harmen develops the brood reading and variation modules. His notes from years of inspections form the basis of the side-by-side comparison sheets.
Nienke Hoekstra
Approach sequence
Nienke works on the approach and closing sequence materials. She focuses on calm handling and the habits that keep a colony workable during inspection.
Jouke Dijkstra
Recording practice
Jouke designs the notebook templates and timed recording exercises. He treats a clear inspection note as a skill that can be practised indoors before the next apiary visit.
